CHI Franciscan Online Vote Scheduled on Actual Timekeeping
The practice of “rounding” an employee’s timecard is being eliminated, and instead CHI Franciscan are converting their timekeeping systems to an “actual timekeeping” calculation- where employees are paid to-the-minute, rather than having the daily totals of their hours-worked rounded up or down to the nearest quarter-hour, respectively.
Due to the changes that a widespread reconfiguration such as this one may cause, we have negotiated an agreement with CHI Franciscan which aims to protect union members against any negative impacts that may come along with this. A summary of our agreement is highlighted below:
Recognizing that overtime pay is more likely to occur (either from the transition to this new timekeeping method, or as a result of your time no longer being “rounded down”) the Employer agree that they will not retaliate or discipline any employee who incurs any such occasional or incidental overtime that results from actual timekeeping.
If an employee records less time than their scheduled shift, “undertime” (i.e. 7 hours and 58 minutes- as opposed to 8 hours) they will not be required to utilize vacation or PTO accruals to satisfy their FTE.
For shifts where employees are paid evening or night premiums, the Employer will work through timekeeping system adjustments to ensure there is no change to eligibility or pay for these premiums (i.e. some systems calculate shift differentials if “the majority of hours’ worked” are within an evening or night shift)
For areas which require that employees don/doff hospital scrubs (like Surgical Services), we have reached an agreement with the Employer that employees will be allowed to clock-in eight minutes prior to their scheduled start-time to do so. These employees will also be allowed eight minutes of paid time to change out of their uniform at the end of their shift, including in circumstances where they may have stayed after their scheduled end-time to finish a case. This time is eligible for overtime compensation, if applicable.
Lastly, we have come to an agreement with CHI Franciscan that discussions between our union and Employer should continue after this change is implemented, so recommendations can be made to the Employer about how to alleviate concerns; for example, including additional timeclocks for ease of clocking in & out, should issues with this arise.
