Providence Patients before Profits Rally July 26

On Friday, July 26 join hundreds of fellow union members from across Washington for a spirited rally at Providence headquarters to stand up for quality patient care and good jobs. All job titles throughout Providence including nurses, nursing assistants, techs, social workers, transporters, hospice workers, pharmacists, environmental services, nutrition workers, clerks and lab workers will gather in a massive show of unity.

We’re all experiencing the same attacks from Providence as the corporation prioritizes excessive executive pay, profits and branding above the needs of patients and front-line workers. We are struggling with severe under-staffing, unaffordable health benefits, unfair wages, cuts to our sick time, and disrespect and discrimination on the job.

Meanwhile, Providence raked in $24.4 BILLION in operating revenue and $165 MILLION in operating profits last year. The CEO Rod Hochman had a 157% increase in total compensation to $10.5 MILLION in 2017, and the top 15 Providence execs had over $41 MILLION in total compensation that year.

LOURDES NURSES MISSED BREAKS LEGAL UPDATE:

GREAT NEWS SETTLEMENT CHECKS COMING FOR MISSED WORK BETWEEN –6/25/09 – 3/10/13

Millions of dollars worth checks are to be mailed as soon as today to RNs from Lourdes who missed breaks between June of 2009 and Mach of 2013.

BACKGROUND

In June 2012, four Registered Nurses filed a lawsuit claiming that Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital failed to ensure nurses could take rest and meal breaks, and record missed breaks as hours worked in violation of Washington law.  Their employer denied it did anything wrong and aggressively defended the lawsuit.  On March 10, 2013, the Hospital revised its breaks policy.  The nurse Plaintiffs amended their lawsuit to cover a period of time from June 25, 2009 through the Hospital’s policy change on March 10, 2013.

After a lengthy legal battle supported by UFCW 21, including a successful appeal to the Washington State Supreme Court, the four nurses’ lawsuit was certified as a class action.  The class representatives negotiated a settlement with the Defendants that included a $5,000,000 common fund to be used for expenses, costs, administrative fees, attorneys fees, and to be divided between RN’s based on hours worked between June 25, 2009 and March 10, 2013.  The settlement was reviewed by the judge and signed as an order on March 1, 2019. 

When workers have a union, it allows for us to take action together. In this case, four nurses took action together to protect their rights to meal and real breaks. And then we won the ability for all the nurses in question to have a right to join together in a class action lawsuit. This is a wonderful victory to right a wrong that started nearly a decade ago. And we hope it will send a message to all employers across the state that they need to follow the law and provide meal and rest breaks for their employees.

UFCW 21 Members at PRMCE Take Action in Everett

UFCW 21 Members Take Action in Everett

After months of negotiations, UFCW 21 Members sent a strong message to Providence Management that the time is now to settle a fair contract with Nurses, Professional Staff and Technical Staff.Hundreds of workers joined by community members and elected officials participated in a day-long informational picket at both the Pacific and Colby campuses. Reading statements of dissatisfaction with Management's feet-dragging at the bargaining table, chanting in solidarity, and delivering hundreds of postcards supporting their Union, UFCW 21 members sent a strong message that they are unified and demand a fair contract.

Our next bargaining session is schedule for Monday, June 11 for the Nurses and Wednesday, June 20 for the Techs. We need to see a proposal from Management that will allow us to:

Recruit and retain the highest quality health care professionals. Give front line health care professionals a real voice in establishing safe staffing levels. Ensure job security so that we can continue to provide quality healthcare service to our community and our region.
